![]() ![]() Comparing the chronometer's time to local sun time, a navigator could measure longitude with high precision in short order. Over a period of 40 years, he developed four increasingly precise chronometers capable of holding accurate time over a long, rough sea voyage. Enter John Harrison, an apparently self-taught English clockmaker. But the calculations could take hours and were tricky even in the best of circumstances one future astronomer royal, under pressure, botched a measurement of the longitude of Barbados. British astronomers saw a solution in the stars, by making sufficiently accurate measurements of lunar positions and comparing them to positions calculated for a known reference point. ![]() After the loss of many ships and human lives as a result of navigational errors, in 1714 Parliament offered a rich prize for a practical way to measure longitude at sea. ![]() Former New York Times reporter Sobel (coauthor, Arthritis: What Works, 1989, etc.) sets the stage by recounting the difficulties early navigators had in determining their exact longitude. The Greek astronomers could measure latitude as early as the third century b.c., but more than 2,000 years passed before the development of a reliable method for measuring longitude. ![]() The subtitle here tells the reader exactly what the book is about what it doesn't say is how much fun it is to read. ![]()

There is some really compelling writing here, as in "Radiant Beings" and the whole last section, "La Frontera/Na(rra)tives." General readers will no doubt stumble through the middle section, titled "Wyrds/Orthographies," but the injection of Native sensibilities in every article takes this literate collection beyond the usual intellectual exercise.Ĭopyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. Even in this broad perspective, there seems to be a unifying theme. As with most collections of the sort, the content is all over the map, from rape and misogyny, to criticism of literary criticism, to personal recollections and family ancestry, to an overview of Native spirituality. While most prior efforts in the genre of the Indian professorial essay collection have drifted between incomprehensible and fanatical, this book from Allen (The Sacred Hoop), of Laguna Pueblo and Lebanese ancestry, is most often even-keeled (if on occasion overwrought: "Let me remind all of us that vegetarianism inevitably accompanies misogyny, racism, tyranny, gynocide, and infanticide"). ![]() ![]() ![]() 247).Ī murder mystery soaked in horror and the uncanny, missed by bibliographers for a century. ![]() "Who ever see a pink warsp wi' a mouth like a purse and blue inside?" The overtly supernatural incidents are few, but to call the book's weirdness "subdued" would be grossly inaccurate. What's not generally known is that the Mill of Silence is a fully fledged weird tale replete with curses, fate, prophecies, a magnificently haunted room, and a pair of ghosts, one sinister, one the other kind. ![]() ![]() ![]() The first US edition was printed by Houghton.
